Featured Destination – Bonaire
Bonaire is the ideal destination for divers to immerse themselves in the depths of the sea and explore the vibrant world below the surface. The allure is that the coral reef, designated as a national park, is just a few feet from the shoreline. Dozens of dive sites are accessible from shore making this island a diver and snorkeler’s paradise with over 370 species of fish and 55 types of coral. Bonaire has been recognized as the number one Shore Diving Destination in the Caribbean and has a long history of nature preservation. For those preferring to keep their heads above water, there are several exquisite beaches where one can just chill for the day. Make sure to bring your swimsuit because these beaches are not nudist friendly.
There is however much more to this tiny island than just the reefs and beaches surrounding it. The cool trade winds traveling across this region creates an ideal climate to enjoy a variety of activities from kayaking among the mangroves to biking and hiking throughout the arid hills. In the northern region, the scenery in and around Washington Slagbaai National Park is absolutely stunning with its vivid flora and fauna. The highest peak, Brandaris, at 784 feet is a relatively mild, 45-minute trail which provides views of the park and surrounding Caribbean Sea. Don’t forget your binoculars if you are a bird enthusiast; there are over 200 avian species here including the Caribbean parakeet and the yellow-shouldered parrot, exclusively found on Bonaire. The famous pink flamingos are known to reside in near Goto Meer lake yet can be quite elusive so keep an eye out.
Tours around the island consist of stops at the salt flats and famous salt pyramids, a visit to the Cadushy distillery where spirits are extracted from local cacti as well as a trip to the donkey sanctuary. Cruise ships dock in the charming capital city of Kralendijk with its brightly painted buildings which showcase the styles of 17th and 18th century architecture. There is a wide range of shops along with restaurants and cafes near the port. All of the stores are independently owned, so there is an opportunity to find something unique during your stay. Take it all in, after one visit, you’ll understand the hidden treasures this island has to offer: from its natural beauty to the culture and cuisine. Bonaire is truly a unique destination.
We will be stopping in Bonaire during our Conquering the Caribbean cruise February 13 – 27, 2022 and staying late so there is an opportunity to do a little of everything while ashore.
